Tunnel boring machine delivery and assembly – Toowong

From mid-May, Transcity will deliver sections of the tunnel boring machines (TBMs) to the western worksite at Toowong.

These deliveries will be made via the project’s Western Freeway entrance and will be undertaken during and outside of the project’s normal construction hours.

Once delivered to the western worksite, Transcity will reassemble the TBMs within the temporary acoustic building in preparation for the start of tunnelling. This work will be undertaken 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

What to expect:

• some noise from the use of heavy machinery and equipment
• vehicles and equipment with flashing lights and white noise reversing beepers for the safety of on-site workers
• traffic control and signage will be in place to direct motorists around the work area, as required
• use of lighting towers.

Why does work need to occur out of hours?

These deliveries must occur outside of normal construction hours due to traffic restrictions on transporting large items and oversized vehicle movements.The timing of these deliveries is subject to weather and construction conditions. This work is compliant with the Coordinator-General’s conditions for the project.

About Legacy Way

Legacy Way is a 4.6km road tunnel that will connect the Western Freeway at Toowong with the Inner City Bypass (ICB) at Kelvin Grove. It will provide an alternative route to local roads for traffic leaving the Western Freeway and travelling to and from the ICB. When it opens, Legacy Way will reduce, by up to 44%, the peak hour travel time of journeys from the Centenary Bridge to the ICB.
