Toowong Cemetery conservation

In 2011, Transcity engaged heritage experts to undertake robust condition audits to identify gravestones which may require conservation prior to the start of Legacy Way construction.

The heritage team, including Converge Heritage and Community, Opus International and Queensland Heritage Masonry, individually studied and categorised each grave according to its current age and existing condition.

Each audited grave was then categorised by the level of mitigation required to guide the necessary conservation and monitoring activities.

Transcity has undertaken conservation activities to protect approximately 120 gravestones that were identified as extremely dilapidated and structurally unsound due to their age and existing condition. These gravestones are located in portions 1, 2A, 5, 11, 12, 16, 18 and 24 of the Toowong Cemetery.

Conservation activities included:

  • temporary dismantling of gravestones deemed to be structurally unsound
  • storing of these gravestones either within the gravesite or in a secure location
  • conservation of gravestones to a safe standard upon completion of tunnelling activities.
