Construction update western worksite – Toowong
The western worksite at Toowong is taking shape ahead of the start of tunnelling in the coming months.
Ongoing activities on the western worksite include:
- work to fit out the spoil conveyor tunnel, which runs underground from the western worksite to the Mt Coot-tha Quarry, including installation of services and the conveyor belt
- final construction of the launch boxes for the tunnel boring machines (TBMs)
- realignment of the Western Freeway’s eastbound (inbound) lanes
- relocation of a water main that runs beneath the Western Freeway
- delivery of TBM parts via the Western Freeway entrance.
Transcity achieved the following milestones in May
- Completion of a six-storey acoustic shed to minimise impacts from light, noise and dust on the community.
- Delivery and installation of 25 oversized precast concrete beams to build part of the tunnel’s cut and cover structure. Each beam was approximately 18 metres long and weighed 45 tonnes.
- Delivery of the main drive of the project’s first tunnel boring machine ‘Annabell’, which weighs 182 tonnes and is six metres in diameter.

UPCOMING OUT OF HOURS WORK – TOOWONG
WESTERN WORKSITE
Transcity will undertake large concrete pours within the western worksite for the tunnel’s cut and cover structure, from June through to September 2012.
Some pours may need to be undertaken out of hours up until 10pm due to the size of each pour. The rate of concrete supply is critical during large pours, so this activity must occur outside peak traffic conditions to avoid delays to concrete delivery.
What to expect
- Vehicles and equipment with flashing lights and white noise reversing beepers for the safety of on-site workers.
- Use of concrete trucks and pumps.
- Use of lighting towers.
- Some low level noise.
MT COOT-THA ROAD
In mid-June, Transcity will undertake one night of work to complete the Mt Coot-tha Road site access.
What to expect
- Some noise from the use of machinery and equipment.
- Traffic control will be in place to direct motorists around the work area as required, however, access along Mt Coot-tha Road and the shared user path will be maintained during this work.
WESTERN FREEWAY
During June and July, Transcity will continue to undertake out of hours activities to realign the inbound lanes of the Western Freeway. This realignment is necessary to create the space required for the entrance and exit lanes of the tunnel.
It is expected that these activities will occur on occasion at night between 8pm and 5am.
What to expect
- Some noise from the use of heavy machinery and equipment.
- Use of lighting towers.
- Temporary single lane closures on the eastbound lanes of the Western Freeway.
- Vehicles and equipment with flashing lights and white noise reversing beepers for the safety of workers.
- Signage and traffic control officers will be in place to safely direct motorists around the works, as required.
This work is subject to Department of Transport and Main Roads’ approval. Activities may be postponed due to wet weather and unforeseen circumstances and additional night work may be required. If additional night work is required, we will endeavour to notify you in advance of these activities.
Thank you for your cooperation and patience during these important activities.

About Legacy Way
Legacy Way is a 4.6km road tunnel that will connect the Western Freeway at Toowong with the Inner City Bypass (ICB) at Kelvin Grove. It will provide an alternative route to local roads for traffic leaving the Western Freeway and travelling to and from the ICB. When it opens, Legacy Way will reduce, by up to 44%, the peak hour travel time of journeys from the Centenary Bridge to the ICB.
Working with you
Transcity is committed to minimising impacts on local residents during the construction of Legacy Way and we look forward to working with you throughout the duration of the project.
